Common Bean Virus Diseases Project

WHAT IS CBVDP?

The Common Bean Virus Diseases Project (CBVDP) is working to characterise viruses affecting common bean production in Tanzania. Tanzania is the main producer of common beans in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, bean productivity is threatened by diseases such as Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) and Bean common mosaic necrosis virus (BCMNV) that can cause yield losses of up to 100%. CBVDP is researching these diseases with the aim of developing strategies to control their spread across Tanzania.

WHAT ARE ITS AIMS?

The objectives of the work are:

  1. To determine the prevalence, incidence and distribution of viral diseases of common beans in Tanzania
  2. To characterize at the molecular level the viruses infecting common beans in Tanzania
  3. To determine the contribution of planting material to dispersal of viral diseases in Tanzania
  1. To develop molecular based diagnostic and detection tools for the viruses
  2. To identify the alternative hosts of viruses infecting common beans
  3. To characterize the response of common bean genotypes to Bean common mosaic virus and Bean common mosaic necrosis virus infections
