Status of the nematode Pratylenchus coffeae in banana-growing areas of Tanzania

Pratylenchus coffeae is among the plant parasitic nematodes contributing to yield losses of banana. A survey was conducted in 2015 to determine the status of P. coffeae in Tanzania. Results showed an increase in total counts of P. coffeae extracted from roots compared to those reported in 1999 in Zanzibar. This survey is also a first report of the presence of this organism on mainland Tanzania where P. coffeae density was high on banana roots collected at 500–1000 m above sea level. Information on the status of P. coffeae is important when planning the management of nematodes in Tanzania.
