Progress on cassava genetic transformation in Tanzania

This poster reports on progress towards controlling cassava mosaic disease and cassava brown streak disease using genetic engineering. This includes the establishment and operationalisation of a containment laboratory facility (BL-2) for cassava transformation, set up at Mikocheni Agricultural Research Institute and the development of embryo cotyledons from Tanzanian cassava landraces. This was the first attempt by national cassava research programmes in Tanzania to integrate genetic engineering for crop improvement.
