This paper reviews the technical background of different commercially available next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms with respect to template generation and the sequencing reaction, and takes a small step towards predicting what the upcoming NGS technologies will bring. NGS is currently evolving into a molecular microscope finding its way into virtually every field of biomedical research. This article closes with an overview of different implementations of NGS in biomedical research.
