Impact of improved IPM practices for banana diseases and pests in Uganda

Impact of improved IPM practices for banana diseases and pests in Uganda

Banana yields in Uganda have suffered from the effects of leaf diseases, nematodes and weevils. To mitigate this damage, an integrated pest management (IPM) package of materials and farming guidance was made available to farmers. These included disease-resistant banana varieties, planting material produced from tissue culture and the benefits of using a mulch. This short article highlights the impact of this effort; it describes the beneficial change that farmers have experienced through their increased income from improved crop yields.
