Extending root shelf-life during marketing by cultivar selection

Extending root shelf-life during marketing by cultivar selection

This is Chapter 5 of the book Sweetpotato postharvest assessment: Experiences from East Africa. It looks at studies on breeding for extended shelf-life in sweetpotato. The objectives were to determine (1) the main forms of deterioration, (2) the variation in cultivar susceptibility to damage, (3) the extent of inherent perishability and the physiological factors involved and (4) the feasibility of breeding for cultivars with longer shelf-life.
